The Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism organized the Health, Longevity and Reconciliation Festival between the days of October 1st and 3rd. Also known as the Nine Kings Festival, it is a means to pray for living persons, delivering them from the possibilities of misfortune and adversity. The Reconciliation part was to recognize and reconcile the mistakes made in their daily life.
This Confucian ceremony which lasted over 3 full days chanted for the well being of 248 persons. It was lead by Fung Loy Kok directors Willie Chiu and Sean Dennison and attended by between 30 and 35 chanters from Canada, USA, Spain, Czech Republic and Australia. The first day of the festival was at Ohio Road in Richmond Hill. The venue next switched to D’Arcy Street in Toronto for another full day, and the third day of the festival was at the Fung Loy Kok International Centre in Orangeville.
The chanting was physically demanding requiring the participants to kneel, bow, straighten up and rise throughout the ceremony. As the festival proceeded there were plenty of smiles as many remarked how they were becoming stronger and more together. Indeed, it was a wonderful way to cultivate our bodies and minds and to be a part of a Fung Loy Kok chanting festival. Having had such a good experience, some of us think that we can make it even better next year.
