In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism will begin generating solar power at its International Taoist Tai Chi Centre and 10 of its locations in Ontario. The Centre’s solar system goes on line this week and the others will follow as the Ontario Power Authority approves licence applications.
The International Taoist Tai Chi Centre is a facility comprised of a Great Practice Hall, meditation suites, dining halls, and one of North America’s largest Taoist temples. On its busiest days, the Centre welcomes hundreds of visitors. The new solar system contains 48 solar panels generating 10 kilowatts of environmentally clean electricity.
In an auspicious coincidence, the panels are being hooked up to the grid in time for the Lantern Festival, an annual festival of lights in the Chinese culture, where attendance can reach 1,000 guests on some years.
